RSUTH Department of Surgery successfully undergoes accreditation from the West African College of Surgeons (WACS).
The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) has successfully completed the accreditation process for the Department of Surgery with the visit of the Accreditation team from the Faculty of Surgery, West African College of Surgeons, led by Prof. V. M. Ramyl. Accompanied by esteemed professionals like Prof. O. N. Ekeke, Prof. I. S. Ogbonnaya, Prof. (BARR) Clement Osime, and Dr. Oyintonbra Koioye.
Prof. Chizindu A. Alikor @ChizinduAlikor, Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, welcomed the team, urging a comprehensive assessment as the insights will guide the hospital in improving our facilities and curriculum to better serve our community. The CMD thanked the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara @SimFubaraKSC
, for his support for the continuous transformation of the hospital that has gained wide applause from accreditation teams that has visited the hospital recently.
Prof. Ramyl commended RSUTH’s Surgery Department for its commitment and dedication, stressing the importance of meeting international standards. Accreditation ensures our training and services align with global benchmarks, crucial for maintaining excellence in medical education and healthcare.
The visit began with a thorough inspection of RSUTH’s Surgery Department facilities, covering infrastructure, patient care, teaching, and research. Both RSUTH management and the team expressed optimism about the future. The final report from the West African College of Surgeons will guide the department’s future steps.

A brief history of RSUTH
The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) formally Braithwaite Memorial Specialist Hospital (BMSH) is a government-owned hospital, named after Eldred Curwen Braithwaite, a British doctor. It is located in Old GRA, Rivers State and was transformed into a state-of-the-art Teaching Hospital by then state Governor of the state, His Excellency, Chief Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike CON for the training of medical students, medical graduates and other health professionals from the Rivers State University in the year 2018.
The hospital is ranked among the largest hospitals in the Niger Delta. The facility has 375 beds capacity. Its departments include Medicine, Paediatrics, Laboratories, Radiology, Family Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Anaesthesia, Surgery, Chemical Pathology, Haematology & Blood Transfusion, Medical Microbiology, Anatomical Pathology, Ophthalmology, Accident and Emergency. Some other departments are Pharmacy, Finance, Maintenance, and General Administration. It has accreditation in most of the Clinical department for the training of resident doctors.
