Gabrin Sign: Bald men suffer more severe symptoms of COVID-19 than others – Study

Keypoints from Research

➡️ Bald men suffer more severe symptoms of coronavirus

➡️Men are more likely to die from coronavirus than women

➡️ Baldness is a risk factor for dying from COVID-19

➡️ Testosterone plays a key role in the virulence of coronavirus

➡️ Suppressing the male hormone, testosterone, may help in reducing the severity syptoms of coronavirus.

Bald men may be at higher risk of suffering from severe Covid19 symptoms, some scientific evidence suggests.

The link is so strong some researchers are suggesting baldness should be considered a risk factor called the “Gabrin sign”.

The term Gabrin sign is named after the first US physician to die of Covid19 in the United States, Dr Frank Gabrin, who was bald.

The lead author of the study, Professor Carlos Wambier of Brown University, said “We really think that baldness is a perfect predictor of severity.”

Data from China since January has shown that men are more likely to die after getting coronavirus.

Data from UK, a report published by Public Health England, found that working-age men were two times as likely as females to die after being diagnosed with Covid-19.

More scientists have been puzzled as to why more men die from Covid19 than women.

But increasingly they believe it could be because androgens – the male sex hormones like testosterone – may play a part in hair loss and also may be boosting the ability of coronavirus to attack human cells.

So what’s the point of all these?

This raises the possibility that treatments suppressing these male hormones, such as those used for male-pattern baldness, could also be used to slow the virus down and give patients more time to fight it off.

Impressive.
