In my final few weeks of medical training, I’d also fallen helplessly in love with an aspect of human health that is so important, so neglected and its negative effects so devastating.
You all already know that I love sexual health so much, but my in-depth exposure to this aspect of human health laid bare the gigantic and grossly neglected problems we face as a society in this regard.
It’s called Psychiatry, or Mental Health, as we call it here in University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).
Most of my psychiatric patients were once mentally sound like SOME OF US 😂, until the precipitating factors came about. The problems are so huge but heavily underreported. Just like sexual health problems, it’s something I’m willing to give my best to see its decline in our environment.
And you know what caused the problem for most of my patients? It’s substance abuse, especially marijuana (Igbo).
Okwa unu afugo nsogbu? 😒😒
Remember the famous Igbo song:
🎶”Igbo (4x)
Igbo na agbakwa mmadu ara🎶
It translates to “Igbo (marijuana) can make someone go mad.” It’s a song that many of us sing but barely assimilate.
I know I’m shaking a very huge table among my readers, especially the guys, but it’s my job to watch out for your health and educate you as much as I can. 😂 😂
The overriding problem is that young people will never cease to look for newer means to get high, and with it comes addiction, dependence and then psychosis.
Now Indonesian youth are taking it to the next level.
Chai! Just negodu! 😏😏
Here is a news report of a brand new level of substance abuse.
REPORT:
Indonesian teenagers are reportedly boiling used sanitary pads and nappies and drinking the resulting liquid in attempts to get high.
The sanitary pads are boiled for around one hour, then the resultant liquid is left to cool before drinking it to get high. The beverage is understood to be “bitter” but is often consumed three times a day by users.
The Indonesian National Drug Agency (BNN) said the chemicals in the sanitary pads give those who drink the concoction a feeling of “flying” and hallucinations.
The bizarre new craze has reportedly gripped youths looking for a cheap and legal way to get high.
The Indonesian Drug Agency added that some teenagers go as far as boiling soiled nappies in the same way as with pads just to get high.
Senior Commander Suprinarto, head of the BNN in Central Java: “The used pads they took from the trash were put in boiling water. After it cooled down, they drank it together.”
Police on the island have in recent weeks arrested teenagers said to be high from the “sanitary pad formula”, Strait Times says. Some of those arrested are as young as 14 years of age.
END
Sooner or later this craze will go viral. As stupid as it is, believe me it will happen.
I never believed that people could smoke coal tar, sludge from dirty gutters, gum, etc. to get high, but now they are common place and our society is worse off.
Brace up for a new level of craze. It might take time, but if this trend in Indonesia continues, then it will hit our shores sooner rather than later – that’s assuming it’s not here already.
And then we will have new mental health issues on our hands.
Never underestimate the power of addiction.

Who will ever believe that persons will one day get euphoria from used sanitary pad? Let us watch as events unfold………..
