Anusol is a medication that is used to treat or relieve the discomfort, pain, itching, swelling caused by external or internal hemorrhoids or piles. Anusol provides a soothing relief and ‘shrinks’ piles. It has also been found to relief the discomfort caused by anal fissures (tear in the lining of the anus) or anal injuries. Anusol is used post-operatively after anal surgeries. It is best used after each bowel emptying.

Anusol comes in different forms. It may be a suppository, cream, or ointment. The creams comes in 23g, 25g or 50g tubes. Anusol is sold in big pharmacy stores, teaching hospitals, and online supermarkets like Jumia, Konga, Ajebo, and Jiji.

Anusol is made up of Balsam of Peru, zinc oxide, Bismuth subgallate, and Bismuth sulphate as active ingredients.

The prices of the the different forms of anusol in Nigeria ranges from #3,500 – #6,000 naira depending your location.

Now how do you use the preparations? Anusol cream, ointment and suppository should be used after the bowels have been emptied. Wash your hands thouroughly before and after applying the medications. The anal area should be thouroughly washed and dried before using the preparation.

The cream and ointment can both be used internally or externally for the anal area. For application into the anus, a nozzle or applicator that comes with the cream should be screwed onto the tube. The applicator should be gently inserted into the rectum and a small amount of cream/ointment squeezed out and then withdrawn slowly and thoroughly washed after use.

It is better to use anusol in the morning, at night, and following each bowel movement. Some authors say the preparation should be used 2-4 times a day after bowel movements.

Anusol preparation should not be used in child and in young adults less than 18 years. It should only be used in pregnancy and breastfeeding women after consultation with your doctor.

Side effects? Redness, swelling, itching and burning at application site may occur. If these symptoms persist, consult your doctor.
