Stomach ulcer/peptic ulcer/gastric ulcer is an injury to the lining of the stomach ocassioned by the excessive secretion of gastric acid.
The risk factors of stomach ulcer is Helicobacter pylori (a bacteria), spicy foods, alcohol intake, stress,family history, extreme starvation, and smoking.
The symptoms of stomach ulcer are epigastric pain, passage of black blood in stool (malena), features of anemia like dizziness, fast heart beat, shock and weight loss.
The tests for ulcer are H.pylori antibody assay, urea breath test, fecal occult blood, stool antibody assay. The confirmatory test for stomach ulcer is upper GI endoscopy.
Other diseases that presents like ulcer are Zollinger Elisson Syndrome, gastritis, gastric cancer in the elderly population, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
The treatment of stomach ulcer is the use of triple therapy which involves amoxicillin, metronidazole, and omeprazole (a protein pump inhibitor). Bismuth suphate (a surface coating drug) is sometimes added to protect the stomach lining.
Gelusin, mist mag,gestid and gascol neutralizes the acidity of the stomach and relieves ulcer symptoms. Other combinations like erythromycin or clarithromycin, omeprazole, and metronidazole can also be taken for two weeks to cure stomach ulcer.
Sometimes an untreated stomach ulcer may perforate leading to life threatening complications that warrants emergency surgery.
Ulcer kit or ulsakit has become increasingly popular for the treatment of stomach among Nigerians.
Kevwe a Pharmacist from Delta state: “Ulcer kit or ulsakit or peptic kit is a combination of clarithromycin 2500mg, omeprazole 20mg, and tinidazole 500mg (2 antibiotics and 1 PPI) used to treat Helicobacter pylori infection.
Depending on the company, ulcer kit is #2,500 peptic kit is #2,000 naira, ulsakit is #3,000 naira. These kits should only be used in severe H.pylori infection and not as a first line treatmemt for stomach ulcer.
It is good to do a test for gastric ulcer before commencing treatment.
Tinidazole, omeprazole and flagyl taken for 2 weeks also effective in the treatment of stomach ulcer”.
Chisom a Pharmacist from Anambra:” ulsakit or ulsa kit is a combination of omeprazole 20mg, Tinidazole 500mg and Clarithromycin 250mg taken morning and evening in a week. A pack of ulsa kit is #3,650. People complain it doesn’t work for them but if taken properly and with strict adherence, ulsa kit clears/cures H. pylori very well. Most people that with these complains do not adhere to the prescription”.
Isioma a Pharmacist from Delta: “There are many brands of triple combination therapy for ulcer treatment. The most popular ones are ulsakit, elicorid, and omefast plus combi kits.
They each contain omeprazole/rabeprazole, clarithromycin, and tinidazole/metronidazole.
Some have amoxicillin as a constituent. I know ulsakit costs #5,000 naira, elicorid is about #8,850 naira, omefast plus is cheaper and it cost about #1,500 naira.
Combination therapy is usually given for 2 weeks with a continuation therapy of proton pump inhibitor (omeprazole or rabeprazole).
During the course of treatment, it is usually advised that patients should avoid foods/fruits that could could trigger hyperacidity.
Fruits such as pineapples, oranges, lemon, grapes fried foods,and cherry should be avoided. Spicy foods, beans, and pepper soups should also be avoid”.

How effective is ulsakit?
Quite effective for some persons if taken as instructed with not mixed dose. Ulsakit cures H pylori if taken religiously.
Side Effects of ulsakit?
They are nausea, vomiting, constipation, allergies, diarrhoea etc.

I was diagnosed with H. Pylori in July this year. Before then, I was having Hotness like pepperish in my Chest, my Hands. Hotness on my head and under my feet. High fever. Cold even during sunny weather. Weakness, Dizziness, pains, Noisy stomach, Hotness in my Ears. Sometimes it makes me to forget my self. Like Loss of memory, Short Sleep at night. My question is, is this the symptoms of ULCER?. Because of all the 3 test that I did, 2 Scan shows GAS IN MY SYSTEM and the other one shows H. Pylori. Thank you

I’m taking ulsa kit, this is my first week been on it for 6days and it just gets worse, my stomach hurts and clenches all the time I don’t eat , I don’t even have appetite.
