2. University College Hospital, Ibadan

12. University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu

The first open heart surgery was performed in 1974 at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu. In April, 2019, the Punch reported that: “the Cardiothoracic Centre of Excellence, University of Nigeria Teaching hospital, Ituku Ozalla, Enugu, has performed 230 successful open-heart surgery since March 2013.

The chairman of the Cardiothoracic Centre, Prof. Basden Onwubere, who disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent in Enugu, said that 50 per cent of those involved were children.

Onwubere, a former Provost of the College of Medicine, stated that although UNTH started open-heart surgery in February 1974 and suspended it in 2007 due to movement to the permanent site at Ituku Ozalla, the number carried out between 2013 till date was far higher than the number of surgeries carried out from 1974 to 2007, 33 years”.

13. Lagos State University Teaching Hospital

The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja performed its first open-heart surgery with a team of local medical specialists in 2017. That same year, the hospital performed free and successful open heart surgeries on five patient’s.

14. Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano

In 2017, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) conducted another successful cardiac pacemaker implantation surgery on an 87-yr old Alhaji Shehu Bashir Nababa and this was reported on Dailytrust. A statement quoted Dr Isma’il Muhammad Inuwa, leader of team of doctors that conducted the operation as saying, “the pacemaker lead electrode wire was inserted into the right ventricle through a vein in the left upper chest and the electrode was connected to the pulse generator placed under the skin.

15. National Hospital Abuja

In August, 2015, the National Hospital, Abuja said it had successfully carried out open heart surgeries on 12 children with heart diseases of varying degrees.
Dr. Jafaru Momoh, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, who disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja, said six of the surgeries were conducted llthrough the collaboration of the Hospital for Humanity, a US-based NGO, under a seven-year collaborative contract agreement. According to him, the latest six surgeries bring the total number of heart surgeries conducted by the hospital to 12.

According to Dr Sola Pitan, Senior Special Assistant on Health to the then Lagos State Governor, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, said: “In Nigeria, the price of an open-heart surgery ranges between N3 million and N9 million, depending on the area, what kind of surgery and a host of other factors as reported by Eagleonline.
